As State Representative David Auwen Promises To Cut Government Waste and Reduce the Size of Government By:
Getting Michigan's Out of Control Spending Problem Under Control
Last year the Michigan Legislature passed the 2008 Fiscal year budget, which included a ten percent funding increase in government spending over the 2007 Fiscal year budget. In order to pay for this massive spending increase, the Michigan Legislature pushed for massive tax increases on both the citizens and businesses in Michigan.
The state should not increase government spending and raise taxes when businesses continue to leave Michigan, taking jobs and families with them. Instead of the normal trend of taxing Michigan's citizens and companies, David Auwen would like to see the Legislature look at TRUE governmental reforms!

Below is a list of reforms that David Auwen supports and reforms that David will support once he is elected State Representative:
- Legislation that would reduce the salaries of all state elected officials by at least five percent;
- Reforming Michigan's welfare system by setting a four year limit on all able bodied welfare recipients;
- Reforming Michigan's Correction Department by opening competitive bidding for selected services and privatizing other selected services within the Department of Corrections; and
- Eliminating lifetime medical benefits for all incoming Legislators.

Making Michigan's Government More Transparent
Accountability and transparency are the pillars to essential reform. The people of Michigan deserve to know how their elected leaders in Lansing are spending their money. David Auwen will demand transparency throughout the budget process, to ensure Michiganders know exactly where their money is being spent.
Other states such as Pennsylvania, Maryland and Texas are states that are trying to create some sort of database that tracks government spending. Obviously, these states have already acknowledged the need for citizens to know where their tax dollars are being spent.
Once elected, David Auwen will work on legislation that will place all state expenditures on a searchable database, easy for the public to use!

Lowering Taxes In Michigan and Reducing Government Regulations
Michigan's economy is on a quick downward economic spiral and will continue in that downward direction if the Michigan Legislature continues to place an undo tax burden on the hard working citizens and business owners of Michigan. David Auwen believes that we need to lower taxes on both citizens and businesses to create a competitive business climate and force the leaders of Michigan to live within the state's means by spending the money we have!!
In 2007, Michigan received the worst rating of all 50 states with regards to its corporate tax rate! Last year the Michigan Legislature passed the new Michigan Business Tax (MBT), a replacement for the old Single Business Tax (SBT). In recent years, Michigan has suffered from many economic hardships. For the last few years, our state has ranked last in income growth and was the only state not hit by a hurricane to lose jobs!
The new MBT is a tax that is going to continue to harm businesses, drive more companies out of Michigan, and eliminate more jobs from Michigan. Michigan cannot continue to punish companies who provide benefits to their employees, benefits such as healthcare coverage. The only way Michigan's economy will begin to recover is if Michigan begins to look at creating a competitive business climate.
David Auwen promises that he will fight for low taxes and reducing government regulations in order to make a better Michigan for everyone!
